Rank Advancement within Troop 76

Rank advancement is a means by which scouts learn scouting skills, develop the capacity for leadership, demonstrate scout spirit, and give back to others. Advancement is based on experiential learning and personal growth is the primary goal. Scouts progress at their own pace through rank advancement.

Scouting America ranks are Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, Eagle.

Troop 76 offers opportunities for rank advancement during regularly-scheduled troop meetings, troop activities, community service, and outdoor activities such as hikes and campouts. Occasionally, there are aspects of rank advancement that involve participation from family members and independent work at home. The Scout Handbook is an excellent resource for requirements to progress through each rank. Opportunities for rank advancement during meetings and campouts are announced in the weekly newsletter.

Scouts who complete rank advancement items will need their handbook signed by an ASM or SM and their completion logged in Scoutbook. At the time of the rank advancement activity, scouts will be given instructions as to whether an adult leader will enter their advancement into Scoutbook or whether the scout himself should do so.

Merit Badges with Troop 76

There are more than 135 merit badges are offered in scouting. Scouts must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges before obtaining Eagle rank. Of those 21, there are 14 designated as "Eagle Required." All other badges a scout pursues are up to personal preference, troop or high adventure need, and Merit Badge Counselor availability.

Troop 76 offers multiple opportunities during the scouting year to earn merit badges during regularly-scheduled troop meetings, special events, and adventure trips. Check the troop calendar and newsletter for announcements.

Troop 76 aims to hold one to two “Merit Badge College” events each scouting year, during which scouts will have an opportunity to work on several badges over the course of one to several weekend days.

Scouts can choose up to four merit badges to pursue at Camp Sequassen each summer.

Throughout the scouting year, there are additional opportunities to pursue merit badges as part of small groups of interested scouts.

76 Merit Badge Procedure

  1. Check with other members of your patrol and other scouts to see who wants to work on that badge with you.
  2. Talk to SM Pearl about your interest. He will either give you a Blue Card to start the badge or advise you about when the badge will be offered by the troop.
  3. After you talk to SM Pearl and receive your Blue Card, contact a council-approved Merit Badge Counselor (MBC) from our list. Remember to cc a parent if you are reaching out via email.
  4. Coordinate with your MBC to work on your badge requirements.
  5. Find the requirements for your merit badge here: https://www.scouting.org/skills/merit-badges/all/
  6. As you work through the badge, your MBC will log your completed requirements in Scoutbook or ask you to do it yourself for later MBC approval.
  7. When the badge is completed, the MBC will sign your Blue Card and mark the badge as completed in Scoutbook.
  8. Give your completed Blue Card to SM Pearl or Mrs. Pearl (Advancement Chair).
  9. You will receive your patch at the next Court of Honor along with a portion of the Blue Card. Keep patches and Blue Cards in your Advancement Binder. You will need all of your badges on a merit badge sash before you sit for your Eagle Board of Review.
